We’re very excited to introduce February’s Potomac Blooms featured florist! This month Galleria Florist located in Falls Church takes the spotlight. They are a full-service floral shop serving the Northern Virginia and DC area for over 20 years. Galleria Florist prides themselves on their ability to accommodate any and all tastes, styles or budgets that customers may request. Their team of talented designers creates floral art that helps people convey that which words cannot for all of life’s occasions.

Potomac Floral Wholesale provided a mystery box of flowers to shop owner Alisa to spark her creative talents!  We selected a vast array of colors and varieties and she did not disappoint with her design.

Galleria Florist is nestled in a small shopping center in northern Virginia. Alisa’s busy shop is buzzing with creativity from the moment you walk in the door. She offers a wide variety of artisan-style arrangements and gifts. The plants on display posed in vignettes that are cleverly assembled using vintage style suitcases to showcase them. Galleria Florist has a unique, boho feel — we’d encourage you to stop by and check it out if you’re in the area.

From our supply department Alisa requested to use our long, weathered, wooden planter box complete with liner to create an arrangement that takes us right out of Winter and thrusts us into thoughts of Spring. Tucked into this wooden box you’ll catch a glimpse of fresh sheet moss garnished around the planter’s edge among an abundance of other flowers such as Juliet garden roses, Sahara roses, green trix dianthus, Ilse peach spray roses, large blush Cloni ranunculus, silver brunia, green cymbidium orchids and mini green hydrangea blooms… simply beautiful.

Alisa created another amazing arrangement using a chunky glass rectangle brimming with fuchsia stock, black privet berry, hot pink hydrangea, fuchsia anemone, toffee roses, red piano garden roses, and accents of gardenia leaves and curly willow tips.

For her third arrangement, she’s featuring the Abelia compote dish. This elegant style arrangement used peach stock, queen ann lace, pink scabiosa, silver brunia, white snapdragons, baby eucalyptus, magnolia leaves, gardenia leaves, peach ranuncluls, Juliet garden roses, pink spray roses, white lisianthus.

In her final creation, Alisa presented an arrangement in a contemporary black ceramic pot filled with fuchsia anemone, yellow freesia, mid-blue stock, movie star coral roses, blue agapanthus, green trix dianthus, bupleurum , variegated  pittosporum, and curly willow tips.

During our visit, we chatted with Alisa to ask her a few questions!

PFW: How did you become a florist/story of your shop?

Alisa:  I used to visit a flower shop on the weekends with my parents when I was a kid. My dad loved it because there were parrots in the greenhouse and because it had a home-goods section. I loved all of it so I asked the owner if I could work there after school…and then I was hooked.  Years later I started my own business in my apartment and while trying to find a production space I found Galleria Florist.  One thing led to another and a few months later I was a shop owner!

PFW: What is your favorite holiday and why?

Alisa:  Favorite floral holiday is a tough one.  I think I have to say Mother’s Day.  Everyone is in a much better mood on Mother’s Day than Valentine’s Day.  Dad’s come in with their kids to pick out flowers, and everyone has a much more relaxed attitude.

PFWIf you were not a floral designer, who would you like to be?

Alisa:  What I used to do which was also a love of mine is window and in-store displays.  Or I would love to do set design for movies.

PFWDo you have any pets?

Alisa:  I do!  Our shop dog Max.

PFWHow do you relax?

Alisa:  Cuddling up with Max and watching a movie.

PFWWhat is your favorite flower?

Alisa: Freesia, lilacs and garden roses.

PFWWhat drives & motivates you?  What are your favorite sources of inspiration?

Alisa:  I studied interior design and used to work in the fashion industry.  I noticed that design trends and colors always start in the fashion world, and then migrate to interior design, food and finally floral design.  So when I need inspiration, I get a coffee and spend an afternoon at the book store going through all of the design books and magazines.

PFW: Anything else you would like people to know about you?

Alisa:  I love creating art in all mediums and I have art nights at home with my friends.  I love collaborating with people and am looking forward to offering classes at the shop soon, so check-in with us and join in for some creative fun in the future.

Alisa and her design team at Galleria Florist entertained and dazzled us with their unique artisan style designs created for Potomac Blooms program. Don’t forget to check back next month to explore another local florist!
